Bakerloo Line

The Bakerloo Line, instantly recognizable by its brown colour on the Tube map, offers tourists a fascinating and convenient journey through some of London's most iconic areas. Stretching from Elephant & Castle in the south-east to Harrow & Wealdstone in the north-west, this deep-level tube line is a blend of history and utility, perfect for exploring the city.
One of the oldest lines on the network, opening in 1906, the Bakerloo Line retains much of its original character. As you descend into its stations, you'll often feel transported back in time, with classic tiled platforms and the distinct, curved tunnels that are a hallmark of deep-level "tube" lines. The trains themselves, while modernised internally, often have a more traditional feel compared to the sleek, air-conditioned carriages on newer lines like the Jubilee or Elizabeth.
Key highlights for tourists travelling on the Bakerloo Line
- Elephant & Castle: While perhaps not a primary tourist destination itself, it's a major transport hub and a starting point for exploring areas south of the river.
- Lambeth North / Waterloo: These stations are your gateways to the South Bank. From here, you can easily walk to the London Eye, Southbank Centre, National Theatre, and the vibrant street art and food stalls under Waterloo Bridge. Waterloo Station itself is one of London's busiest railway terminuses.
- Embankment: Perfectly positioned on the River Thames, Embankment is ideal for riverside strolls, with views of Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, and the London Eye. It's also a short walk to Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery.
- Charing Cross: Right in the heart of London, Charing Cross provides direct access to Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square (for theatre and entertainment), and Covent Garden's bustling market and street performers.
- Piccadilly Circus: Step off here into the dazzling lights and energy of Piccadilly Circus. It's the epicentre of London's entertainment district, with theatres, shops, and the famous Eros statue. From here, you're minutes from Regent Street and Oxford Street for shopping.
- Oxford Circus: Another major shopping destination, Oxford Circus is where Oxford Street and Regent Street intersect. It's a key interchange for the Central and Victoria lines, making it easy to connect to other parts of the city.
- Regent's Park: Alight here for a peaceful escape into one of London's most beautiful royal parks. Enjoy a stroll, visit Queen Mary's Rose Garden, or head to London Zoo.
- Baker Street: An absolute must for fans of Sherlock Holmes. Visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum, and soak in the atmosphere of this iconic literary location. Baker Street station itself is one of the oldest on the network and has some fascinating historical features.
- Marylebone: A smaller, charming mainline station and an area known for its elegant streets, independent boutiques, and Marylebone High Street.
Tips for riding the Bakerloo Line
- Mind the Gap! This famous phrase is particularly relevant on older lines like the Bakerloo, where platform curves can create a larger gap between the train and the platform edge. Always pay attention when stepping on and off.
- Can get busy: Like all central London lines, the Bakerloo can get very crowded during peak hours (roughly 7:30 AM - 9:30 AM and 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM on weekdays). If you have flexibility, try to travel outside these times for a more comfortable experience.
- No air conditioning: Being an older, deep-level line, the Bakerloo trains do not have air conditioning. They can get quite warm, especially during summer months. Carry water, particularly on hot days.
While it might not be the most modern or fastest line, the Bakerloo Line offers a quintessentially London Tube experience. It's a reliable workhorse that will take you to many of the city's key attractions, allowing you to soak in both the vibrant street life above and the rich history of the Underground below.
